A Midsummer Night’s Dream Character: Hippolyta (The Duke’s wife/Queen) Idea: Hippolyta talks from her point of view about Hermia being forced to marry Demetrius because of her father and Theseus’ decision. SCRIPT This isn’t justice, not right at all, why is he doing this to the poor girl. Of course I have no say in the “Duke’s” decision but these young people have the right to be with whoever they wish to be with just like Theseus and I. I mean what kind of cruel and unfair punishments are these, I couldn’t believe it. Having to marry someone else while loving another and if not that, becoming a nun or having to die! This is not what I believe in, at all! God forbid if she chooses the worst, who is to blame. I would definitely put all the blame on Theseus and her cruel father who is forcing this on her. Why can’t he just sacrifice his wish for his daughter’s happiness? For what reason does Egeus want her to marry Demetrius? Is it that he hates Lysander or loves Demetrius? Hermia will never have that kind of happiness with Demetrius that she’ll have with Lysander. If I was forced to be away from Theseus I would never accept that decision and go against everyone and I think with that much pressure Hermia will do the same. In my opinion, due to how Egeus is treating Hermia, she should never agree to anything he says. He is her father but allowing a death penalty is just plain wrong. What I really can’t believe is Theseus letting this happen! Does he not have a heart? Is he not in love? Does he not know the feeling? It might just be the law but he can for once take the girl’s side and let her do what she likes. If she runs away with Lysander then what, what can they do? Nothing, really just nothing then you might as well let them be together without all this trouble. Does this not also bother Demetrius that he’ll be married to Lysander’s love who does not love
