* Statement of the problem
Assessing the roles and challenges of leadership in supporting micro and small enterprises development; a case of Assosa Benishangul Gumuz Regional state.
Micro and small enterprise are increasingly becoming popular and important in the Ethiopian economy as they would play an important role in contributing to employment generation, poverty reduction and the opening of wider distribution of wealth and opportunities. However, MSEs have faced a number of constraints, among others, lack of leadership commitment, lack of access to markets, finance, business information; lack of business premises; low ability to acquire skills and managerial expertise; low access to appropriate technology and poor access to quality business infrastructure (Stevenson & Annette, 2006).
According to the research undertaken in kolfe keraneosub-city of addis ababa by Workneh (2007:51) indicate that lack of capital, lack of market, unfavorable policy, and inadequate infrastructure, absence of adequate and relevant training, bureaucratic structure and procedures are among constraints faced by MSEs. Similarly, Dagne (2013:70) in his research carried out in Burayu Town shows that ineffective leadership, human and financial resource constraints, attitudinal problems, weak partnership and networking and lack of awareness on MSE policies, strategies and support framework which are impacting the performance of support institution in addressing support service to MSEs. Among the critical includes; lack of being visionary, business expedience, capital, business plan development skill, proper record keeping, poor business management, lack of credit repayment , miss utilization of supports, dependency and rent seeking attitude are the major one.
