Colin Powell Colin Powel is one of the most significant African Americans of our time through his success, popularity, and leadership excellence. He has achieved greatness throughout his life in various military and governmental positions which also have lead him to who he is now. He deserves the recognition he has received since he has shown outstanding leadership qualities through countless world crises and four United States presidents. Colin Powell was born in New York City on April 5, 1937 and was raised in the South Bronx. His parents, Luther and Maud Powell, immigrated to the United States from Jamaica.

Asa Philip Randolph was a Negro Labor’s Champion; a man on a mission. He was a born leader whose struggle for equality in the U.S labor force was relentless. A. Phillip Randolph is a hero of the American Civil Rights and Labor Movements. He was a man who demanded respect for African-Americans during the Civil Rights movement, and for all working people throughout his career as a Labor organizer.
In May 27, 1939 was born Richard Cyril Rescorla, also known and most known as Rick Rescorla. He was born in Hayle, Cornwall, U.K. to a working class family. Rescorla was a man with a great mindset and very determine. In his early childhood Rescorla was consider a sports natural by being in school programs in sports such as shot-put and boxing. Rescorla enlisted in the British Army in 1957 at only 18 years of age.
Martin Luther King was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Martin Luther King, Jr. Chronology) Michael Luther King was King's original named before he had it changed. King was a well-educated man who went to high school in Georgia and attended Morehouse College, at the age of 15. He later continued his studies at Boston University, receiving his doctoral degree in Philosophy in Systematic Theology at a time when it was very difficult for African Americans to attend school with European Americans. King's great and effective leadership role and his success in protesting for desegregation of buses, made him one of the prime leaders of the civil rights movement.
The inventor, Lewis Howard Latimer had parents who were slaves of James B. Gray in Virginia. George and Rebecca Latimer escaped and found their way to Boston, Massachusetts. George Lewis’ father was very clever and brave because he posed as a plantation owner. He was able to pass as a white man because of his light skin complexion.

He was given the Copley award which is an award for outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science it was given by the Royal Society of London. Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, and founded the first library. He was put to work at the age of 10 by his father making soap and candles; he didn’t like that too much, so he started writing newspapers with his brother.
Some have said that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the father of the Civil Rights Movement. He is credited with some of the finest work, up to and including his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the White House. His work began years before that beautiful and moving speech was delivered, however. In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery; he became an executive member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. By December 1955, he accepted leadership of the first nonviolent demonstration – the famous Montgomery bus boycott of 1956.
Martin had an enormous effect in social America. He led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama that was noticed world wide. In 1963, Dr. King directed a peaceful march in Washington D.C. when he delivered the speech, “I have a dream…” He was also named Man of the Year by Time Magazine in 1963. Martin led a social reform movement for civil rights that unified the middle class African-Americans. At age thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr. was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Self-educated, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, dedicated to promoting African-Americans and resettlement in Africa. In the United States he launched several businesses to promote a separate black nation. After he was convicted of mail fraud and deported back to Jamaica, he continued his work for black repatriation to Africa. Marcus Mosiah Garvey was the last of 11 children born to Marcus Garvey, Sr. and Sarah Jane Richards. His father was a stone mason, and his mother a domestic worker and farmer.
