Michael Manley Introduction This course work is about an in-depth study of Michael Manley, who was a politician, leader, author and intellectual and his contribution to the regional development. This study includes his part in the development and refinement of his home land, Jamaica and the Caribbean as a whole. Research and Discussion and Conclusion Michael Manley was born on December 10, 1924 in Kingston, Jamaica and passed March 6, 1997 at age seventy two (72) years old. He was the son of the national hero of Jamaica, the right excellent Norman Washington Manley and Edna Manley a renowned sculptor and patron/ facilitator of Jamaica arts and culture. He was a man of his words and did all he could in his life time to help in the development of the Caribbean. Michael Manley was a pass student of Jamaica College High School between 1935 and 1943; thereafter he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the World War II. In 1949 he entered the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he began a profession in Activism. “During his tenure at LSE he was a member of the student West Indian Students' Union Caribbean Labour Congress where he campaigned against racial discrimination in London and supported the huge effort for a West Indian Federation and political independence for the Caribbean.” (Michael Manley: A man for the people, 2003) Michael thereafter worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as a Broadcast Journalist then returned to Jamaica in 1951 and served as an Editor and Columnist for the newspaper Public Opinion. In 1952 Michael became a member of the People's National Party (PNP) where he worked with National Workers Union (NWU). He was the chief negotiator for the NWU between 1955 and 1972 where he gave outstanding contribution to the Jamaica Labour Market providing great ideas and working
