The Imaginary The quote “Never say never, because limits, like fear, are often just an illusion” was said by the all-time best player in the NBA, Michael Jordan. This quote speaks to me because it is concise and straight to the point. Jordan has said countless inspirational quotes, but this quote is my favorite. Growing up as a child, I would, more often than not, take the easy road of completing a task. This is true for athletics and school. As I progressed through the school system, I luckily did not have much trouble understanding the material until it came to high school where the level of comprehension and the level of the subject matter are much more challenging. In the earlier years of school from kindergarten to eighth grade, I did not try very hard. I didn’t need to try extra hard because I understood what was being taught fairly well, but when a problem or idea came up that I did not understand as easily as the others, I would not try to solve the problem. Rather, I would wait until the answer was given. I would take the easy road and just not try. When called upon to answer a question, I did not understand I simply said, “I can’t do it.” This way of thinking was not preparing me for high school and the rest of life. Thankfully, in eighth grade I had just finished watching a replay of the 1991 NBA Championship game where the Bulls beat the Lakers to earn Michael Jordan his first of six championships. Watching this game and watching the great man himself play prompted me to research about him. When I googled the name “Michael Jordan,” a list of his famous quotes appeared and the first one being, “Never say never, limits, like fear, are often an illusion.” This advice from Michael Jordan could not have come at a better time, since I had just come out of a bad attack of my Crohn’s disease.
