Week 4 Team Reflection Organizational behavior is the theme of Week 4. Team C discussed how organizational structure, culture, and power impact behavior. While analyzing those topics, we learned the agendas for companies when forming a structure. Organizational culture develops from individual perspectives based on the concepts of businesses. There are many influential forms contributed to power and politics. Organizational structure on behavior Organizational structure influences employee behavior depending on the company design. The simple structure does not contain departments. It has a wide span of control with one manager, e.g., small businesses. Accountability is clear in this cost efficient structure. Employees have a clear direction of who they report to. The bureaucracy structure involves more standardization with routines in operating tasks through specialization. Organizations that use this structure can operate with lower skilled employees because of the set rules and regulations. Larger companies use the matrix structure where each person has a functional manager and product manager. Specialists are grouped together with frequent communication. Because of the open communication aspect information travels fast and everyone is always in the know. Conflicts appear because of power struggles, which place stress on employees. Employees report to two people who cause them to question which manager to go to. Organizational culture on behavior Business Dictionary (2014) describes organizational culture as, “the values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization.” Managers promote positive values from leading by example.
