Meursault Is Found Guilty for the Charge of Premeditated Murder

Meursault is found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to death by guillotine. At the beginning of Meursault’s trial, the judge questions Meursault about why he put his mother in a home, and if it taunted him. Meursault states that he didn’t have enough money to provide for care for her and that they were both alright with living the way they had to because they didn’t expect anything from one another. Meursault’s relationship with his mother was loving, but very distant. The director of the home Meursault’s mother was in, claims that she complained about being put into a home by her son. He says that he was surprised with how calm Meursault was during the funeral. He also says that he remembers that Meursault didn’t want to see his mother’s body, nor did he shed a tear. Meursault notices the hatred the courtroom has towards him. The caretaker testifies and says that Meursault smoked a cigarette and drank coffee during his vigil. Then Thomas Perez took the stand and was asked if he noticed whether or not Meursault cried. Celeste attributed Meursault’s killing of the arab to bad luck. Marie’s testimony revealed Meursaults plan to marry her. The prosecutor stressed that Marie and Meursaults sexual relationship began the weekend after the funeral of his mother. They also went to see a comedy at the movie theater that day. Raymond testifies that it was just by chance that Meursault became involved in his dispute with his mistress’s brother. The prosectutor asked if it was just chance that Meursault wrote the letter to Raymond’s mistress’s brother. Then testified on Raymonds behalf at the police sation and went to the beach the day of the crime. The prosecutor cites Meursault’s obvious intelligence and lack of remorse as evidence of premeditated murder. He reminded the jury that the next trial on the courts schedule involves parricide the prosecutor
