Both the Metric and the Imperial system are a way of measuring units such as weight, distance and capacity. The majority of the world uses the metric system. Only 3 countries use the imperial system, Liberia, Burma and the United States. When comparing the metric and the imperial systems there are many disadvantages and benefits of both. Since the beginning, the establishment was to find a simple, and easily used system of measures to help with international trade and scientific research. Some basic Imperial measurements are feet, inches, pounds, cups, gallons, fluid ounce, pints, Fahrenheit and more. In metric system the basic measurements are kilometers, centimeters, milliliters, kilograms, Celsius, etc. Both the Imperial system and the Metric system make sense. In reality there is more than just one way of doing something. Just like in mathematics, there are multiple methods in working out division, subtraction, expanding brackets, etc. It’s the same in this case. There are both advantages and disadvantages of both the Imperial system and the metric system. The Imperial system is more relatable to real life. The units are built around the human body. For example an inch is approximately the length of a thumb, the foot is around the length of an average man’s foot, the yard unit is the length of a real yard. This even applies for measuring capacity. A cup, can be related it to a size of an average cup. The Imperial system lacks to cover enough of range for many modern measurements. Many engineers and architects need to convert in order to calculate small measurements such as mass of blood cells, wavelength of light, etc. Research indicates that since 1991 NASA is required to use metric wherever achievable. In the past it has not been taken seriously enough, which cause a space probe to crash (Sept 1999) because of the
