'Mending Wall' is an interesting poem that is symbolic of the differences in human thinking on barriers Robert Frost is known to make use of nature and pathetic fallacies in his poems and a lot of symbolism that leaves the reader to imagine what he really means,making his poems highly subjective. In this piece, Frost has used words and phrases that we could draw parallels with,he uses a sense of underlying meanings with these phrases. In the title itself, ‘Mending wall’ the poet lets us know that the poem is about a wall or a fence,but later the reader realizes that it’s more than just the words on the surface that Frost wants us to recognize. The poet refers to the wall as a solid object but also a psychological or invisible wall,this wall signifies the differences between the two neighbors. Ironically,when the wall is actually supposed to separate two beings,this wall reunites the two neighbors ,this is seen in the title ‘Mending wall’,where one might suggest that this is grammatically incorrect, what Frost might actually be intending is that the poem is more about the wall mending the relationship between the two individuals than the two merely mending the wall itself !This wall maybe built due to differences in thoughts and ideas or merely just because of social awkwardness of the two characters.
Lastly, the writer said that “I love them for finding what I can’t find” and for assuming that there was this secret of life, and she also loved them for wanting to know it. The girls have made a discovery in one of the writer’s poem and found something that was life changing. Levertov even loves them for forgetting it which means that they may find it again in different places and different occasions throughout the rest of their lives. Therefore, “the secret” to life is really found over and over in many situations and not in just one
Although some may disagree when asked whether or not a poem has the same affect and as other forms of literature when telling a love story, I would agree. For instance, Street Love, by Walter Dean Myers, is a wonderfully written book of poetry that tells a tale of a young woman, by the name of Junice, who is rescued from a life leading to crime and later, prison, when she falls in love with Damien (a young man from a much better part of town). As one reads through the book they are taken on a journey, through Junice’s eyes and mind. You get to experience her life of hardship and sadness, which ultimately makes one feel a deeper connection with Junice and what she is put through. Even before one reads this book they cannot understand what it truly means to break away from hardship and into love without reading and comprehending the passion and love in each and every line of this poetry.
This idea is continued in his mother “wanting only what was best,” an anecdote symbolising ignorance and sacrifice. Peter Skrzynecki explores the idea of choosing not to belong. The persona is distancing himself from his school through distraction: "fervently counted/ the seventy-eight pages". He violently “stuck pine needles” into the motto. This use of pine needles in attacking the motto highlights violence and aggression the persona feels towards the school, which is a direct reflection of his lack of interaction with others, resulting in his feelings of insecurity and actions of defiance which in turn builds a greater barrier to belonging.
Fortunato screams confusedly as Montresor builds the first layer of the wall. As the layers continue to rise, Fortunato is quite thinking its all a joke. When he realizes Montresor is not joking. Scared he screams “For the love of God, Montresor!” He fits the last stone into place and utters “May he rest in peace.” In conclusion, the narrator may not be reliable seeming as he never said how Fortunato betrayed him, so we can not really take sides or understand his anger completley, or if his actions are justified. I do know however that nothing feels better than revenge but do not killing is something I am capable of.
I’m intrigued by this poem’s subject matter but annoyed by the poet’s incessant use of fragments. This eight-stanza poem begins with its briefest verse paragraph, a single sentence about the speaker’s father. The repetition of monosyllabic words in the second line, coupled with author’s use of alliteration, creates a sing-song rhythm that establishes a happy tone which the rest of the poem adheres to. Though the poem is framed by a somewhat negative image—that of the childhood Shihab failing in a spelling bee and apparently obsessing over it for the rest of her life—this work is decidedly celebratory. One can imagine the poet given her father credit for her ability as a writer, as “star[ing],” or close examination, is a requisite skill for any good scribe.
So why do it? For instance when Mildred had her friends over they were enjoying themselves while huddled around the “telivisor“. This was their enjoyment, their fun. Then, when Montag read the poem, things changed, “Mrs. Phelps was crying,” then Mrs. Bowles angrily said, “… I always said poetry and tears, poetry and suicide and crying and awful feelings, poetry and sickness; all that mush!” (101).
The last stanza is the sharpest where while she’s still in her thoughts, she is talking directly to the reader and criticizing them. Saying, oh yeah, you think you got my point, you think you are listening to me, you’re not, you are still stuck in the same mentality, even if this did open your eyes a bit. (You’ll nod you’re head and say, “This is an amazing poem! And
I had no idea what I was writing, but I was writing. Elaborate stories, sucky poems, childish songs; anything to keep my mind occupied. I was in a very dark place I finally found a safe haven. My very first song was about a girl, how cliché. It was a love song entitled “Speechless” about this girl I had never had the courage to talk to.
A Lesson in Mastering Loss Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “One Art” is about loss. In it she mentions many of the small losses in life that we may experience but she is clearly talking about losing a love. Who she is speaking to in this poem is unclear but there is evidence to show that she and she alone is her own audience for this poem. She expresses denial, anger, blame, regret, humor and in the end she exclaims “Write it!”, which looks to be directed from the speaker to herself, either way it can be construed as acceptance. In the poem she goes through increasingly bigger losses that she quickly dismisses in a sarcastic manner until she reaches the loss of her lover.
