Statistics have shown that the violence among young people is increasing every year. Many people blame musicians and other types of artists who portray negative actions as something positive. Others might blame the parents for not watching over their children. But many people fall short to bring up technology as an issue. With the new DVD that shows sex and violence or computers that gives kids access to unauthorized sites, technology is something that many parents need to look out for.
“Runaway Love” In the world today, there are several social issues affecting mankind. One major issue that disturbs our society is child abuse. Over the years, this horrific crime has increased and a number of people are trying to speak up and stop abuse from occurring. One method in which this transpires is through music. A particular artist by the name of Ludacris decided that enough was enough and determined that he would take a stand against abuse in his song, “Runaway Love.” This song, performed by Ludacris and featuring Mary J. Blige, voices their concern about the issues of rape, physical violence, gun violence, and unwanted pregnancy.
For example, the tabloids put out crazy stories of made up things just to get people interested enough to buy their paper. Such as the pictures of Michael Jackson's baby, the tabloids showed pictures of a baby, claiming that it was Michaels's baby. When in fact, it was not even his. The press also gets too involved in people's public and private lives. Though, people do have the right of privacy, the press has ways to get around it with their right of freedom and their freedom of technology usage.
It is necessary to take a closer look at whether or not violence in the media really is responsible for this development and then to examine what censorship may entail before taking such a far-reaching decision. Many concerned people, ranging from worried parents through to reputable psychologists, deplore the ever-present nature of violence in the media, claiming that this is the reason why people are increasingly prepared to commit violent acts. They argue that violence is being propagated as normal or even entertaining. Violence is in the newspapers, on the news, in film plots and in cartoons. Violence is a source of laughter in children's programs; films present it as staple fare; it is served as pseudo-information in sensation-hungry newspapers and on reality TV; and it is even glorified by some musicians in their lyrics and performances.
The physical and mental effects on teenagers through technology are causing concerns for many parents and experts. According to Strasburger, Jordan, and Donnerstein, "parents and professionals are seeing an increase in aggressive behavior, sexual experimentation, weight gain and loss, and school academics” (Strasburger, Jordan, & Donnerstein, 2010). The average teenager will have viewed almost 200 000 violence acts on television. Interactive technology can foster antisocial beliefs and behavior in teens because of the violence in new technology, which can be found video games. An example is "In the aftermath of the West Paducah, KY School shooting, it was revealed, the shooter had never fired a real gun in his life, yet his marksmanship was both accurate and lethal” (Strasburger, Jordan, & Donnerstein, 2010).
Steroids, Greatly Misunderstood It’s not your typical everyday conversation between you, friends, and family but when the subject of steroid use is brought up immediately everyone thinks of oversized muscle heads suffering from either “roid-rage“ or suicidal tendencies. In actuality these are extreme cases that get extra hype and publicity because of the few but intense incidents that the media focus their attention on. This skeptic view created by the news stations across our nation has tarnished the use of steroids and the benefits they bring with an image of drug dealers and deformed body builders. How dangerous are steroids? Anabolic steroids are essentially extremely safe and greatly beneficial for numerous health complications.
Many perpetrators of driving under the influence were given what can be considered as a slap on the wrist, leaving them with the opportunity to causing a more serious incident. This problem was considered a social problem because it potentially affected everyone and most of society was unaware of the seriousness of the problem (Patricia & Goldbas, 2013). Even before MADD's creation and going back as far as the early 1900s, drinking and driving and alcohol-related incidents had been a problem within the United States. With the publicity that MADD created on this issue the history of drinking and driving and the "problem drinker" was brought to the attention of Americans so action could be taken (Patricia & Goldbas, 2013). There was a wide range of important policies that were changed and created as a result of MADD's influence.
Schechter R, et al. (2008.) The media also plays a large role in over diagnosing of autism because media feeds off and feeds the public interest in mental disorders. This happens in two ways. Periodically, the media becomes obsessed with one or another celebrity whose public meltdown seems related to a real or imagined mental disorder.
Drug cartels have taken over “pueblos” city’s even states, causing fear in the residents of such places. For the most part people are forced to leave their houses or take members of these cartels in to their home; these people also recruit young kids and teens into joining forces with them offering those loads of money and power. This causes fear in the parents of the families with the lowest income they know that the cartels are hunting for kids that need the money, that wish to help their parents, or those who are just looking for the easy way out. Not only do these people look to add members to their own cartels, they wish to minimize the sizes of contrary cartels, and for that they started a war between themselves. This war has been going on for years but was silent an remain unknown to the rest of the world till around 2008 when all hell went loose, taking the life of many innocent, cartels wouldn’t care whether they were in front of a school or a church they would attack each other anywhere in the effort to getting rid of one another.
The increase in violent crime by youth is an alarming trend that has many contributing factors. An environment where violence is fed to our youth daily from all avenues including, home, school, and the media can only reinforce the concept of violence as the answer to our problems. Who has the answer for such dramatic damage in our society? Experts who have studied youthful offenders state that most of them grew up in broken and abusive families marked by drugs and alcohol, violence and mental illness. Abuse at such an early age can lead to aggression and violence (The New York Times, 2000).
