Media Responsibility vs. Media Corruption Raymond Jackson English 101 Composition 1 Professor Albi MEDIA RESPONSIBILITY VS MEDIA CORRUPTION Media has changed our outlook on the world drastically in the 21st century. We have come to depend on it! We spend countless hours engaged with one form of media or another. From reading the morning paper, to watching TV news, by getting our news from other sources such as the internet, i-pads, laptops, i-phones or even our cellphones, welcome to the digital information age. An example of this is the recent disasters in Japan. As the whole world witnessed the terrible effects of Japan’s earthquakes and tsunami, we watched horrified, in real time those tragic events. With recent technological breakthroughs almost any ambitious individual can became an “instant reporter” of events, without the ethical restrictions. This is new media technology at its best. We have been taught to trust established news outlets to customarily check its sources for content originality and authenticity. That is Media Responsibility. “In the social responsibility theory of the press, the media is driven to benefit the public. It expects journalist to answer society’s need for truth. That requires an open and diverse debate on public issues, and honest updates of current events. In this model, media ethics is automatic because the press is free to serve its purpose for the public, as opposed to special interest groups or advertisers. Another condition of the social responsibility model is that news reporting cannot be dependent on groups that may encourage bias and unethical practices in exchange for financial support.” (Coleman Sep 2009).
