It is one of the oldest Islamic monument that has survived throughout many time periods. The Dome of the Rock is built on a sacred rock, just like the Ka'ba in Mecca. The rock is sacred to both the Jews and Muslims. The Dome of the Rock is thought to be the spot where Muhammad ascend to heaven during his Night Journey. For the Jews, it was where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Isaac.
Zeitoun, as he is referred to in the book, was one of many innocent people incarcerated after the hurricane struck in late August of 2005. He is a devout Muslim who emigrated from Syria to America. Although the book primarily focuses on Zeitoun’s experiences surrounding the hurricane, Dave Eggers backtracks and explores Zeitoun’s noble history, family heritage, beloved homeland, and life in America prior to the hurricane. The ways of the world have changed, and things are not quite so barbaric. People still continue to believe in the teachings of both Jesus and Muhammad. Muslims are encouraged to pray, Facing Ka’bah, five times a day. Mosques, or places of worship, are attended each week. During Ramadan, Muslims will fast and they are encouraged to try to make at least one pilgrimage to the Ka’bah, in Mecca, at least once in their life.
