Critical Analysis: Ka-Ching by Margaret Atwood Author’s Voice The essay that I chose to analyze was the personal essay, Ka-Ching by Margaret Atwood. I feel that Atwood intended for mostly teenagers to read this essay, because most teenagers can relate to the feeling of being unsure and confused at a new job. Also, most teenagers are faced with the decision to go to university/college and further their education or to just start work straight from high school. This relates to the essay because it shows the difference between book smarts and street smarts and how they are completely different. I feel that this is also the thesis of the essay, however I do not have a direct quote for the thesis because it is an implicit thesis.
Roberta Flack Roberta Flack was born February 10, 1940, in the small town of Black Mountain, NC, but she grew up in Arlington, VA. She was the daughter of Loran and Irene Flack, who were both skilled musicians. Her father taught himself to play the piano and her mother had formal piano lessons, which had Roberta around music all the time. She started taking formal piano lessons at the age of nine. At the age of 13 she had won second place in a state-wide piano competition between the black students. By the age of 15 she had already graduated from high school and earned a piano scholarship to Howard University.
But as an adolescent, the book is trying to tell you that nothing comes easy in life and to choose your paths wisely. Dr. Seuss uses rhythms and rhyming to engage the listeners or readers of this children’s book. When reading any book or listening to a song at a young age, we don’t truly digest the lesson they are trying to give to us. When I was younger and read “Oh The Places You’ll Go” I thought the message Dr. Seuss was trying to tell me was there are many exotic places in the world that I need to visit. I also thought the book was telling me to be adventurous and do crazy things in life.
Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She is best known for her best seller, To Kill a Mockingbird which was published in 1959. Surprisingly, it is her one and only book that has ever been published but it is popular because of the racial message that it has. The book is similar to her childhood where she incorporated friends and family into characters for her story. Lee came from a family of four children.

The Golden Apples (1949) includes seven interlocking stories that trace life in the fictional Morgana, Mississippi, from the turn of the century until the late 1940s. When Welty began writing the stories, however, she had no idea that they would be connected. Midway through the composition process, she finally realized that she was writing about a common cast of characters, that the characters of one story seemed to be younger or older versions of the characters in other stories, and she decided to create a book that was neither novel nor story collection. It is perhaps the greatest triumph of her distinguished career, an unmatched example of the story
The autobiography is now frequently read as a complement to non fictional works that delve into the subject of racism. The autobiography tells that the strength of character and a love of literature helped Maya Angelou overcoming racism and trauma. The autobiography begins with three years old Maya and her older brother Bailey, they both are sent to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their grandmother and ends when Maya becomes a mother at the age of 16. Angelou was challenged by her friend, author James Baldwin, and her editor, Robert Loomis, to write an autobiography that was also a piece of literature. Reviewers often categorize I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as autobiographical fiction because Angelou uses thematic development and other techniques common to fiction, but some critical view
“The Awakening” By Kate Chopin Kate Chopin uses many different situations and different settings in the novel “The Awakening” to get her points and aspects of the story across to the readers. Throughout the story Chopin also uses many different literary techniques and situations to explain the characters and their place within the story. Chopin seems to be very specific at points, but also very vague when brining new characters into the story and the meaning behind such characters. From the many different aspects of the story the significance of the ending of the novel seems to be the most important and most interesting within the works writing. Chopin seems to use many different themes and symbols throughout the story to portray Edna’s character and way of life that causes the many problems and difficulties for her.
Reese H. One of the most inspiring women to me is Oprah Gail Winfrey. She was born on January 29, 1954 at 7:51 P.M. EST in Kosciusko, Mississippi, USA. Oprah was the daughter of two unwed teens, Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. Oprah had two siblings, one half brother and one half sister, that both died. Oprah was originally named “Orpah” after the Biblical character in the book of Ruth, but there was a typo on her birth certificate.
