Romeo and Juliet are two lovers, from two different families that happen to be enemies. Their families are against their marriage and love, to a point where Juliet’s father threatens to disown her. Since they love each other so much they decide to secretly get married. Romeo’s and Juliet’s fathers made it almost impossible for them to get married, especially Juliet’s father; he would disown her if she did not follow through with the arranged marriage with Paris. This situation made it more difficult for Juliet and Romeo to be together. In the short story Marriage is not a private affair by Chinua Achebe, has a similar concept that occurs between Romeo and Juliet. Nnaemeka has a problem with his father, which is his father disowning him for marrying another women, Nene, instead of following through the arranged marriage with Ugoya Nweke. Nnaemeka feels that he should be married to Nene because he loves her. He would go as far being disowned by his father just to be with Nene. Nnaemeka makes the right decision by pursuing Nene as his wife and going against his father wishes. Nnaemeka displays the importance of love by following his heart and going against father’s traditions and beliefs. Nnaemeka is convinced by his wife to tell his father about their marriage, but he believes this is not a wise idea. So he visits his father and breaks the news to his father about his marriage. His father does not agree but Nnaemeka believes he should perpetuate his marriage with Nene. “Nene Atang from Calibar. She is the only girl I can marry” (1358). Nnaemeka expresses his love for Nene by stating she is the only girl that he can marry, which justifies that love is important to him in a marriage. He follows his heart and is willing to go against his father’s wishes. He wants to let his father know that his love for Nene is so real and he that can only be married to
