Marley and Me In the movie Marley and Me, theme, allegory and tone/mood are all important elements which contribute to how at certain times Marley goes crazy and drives his owners insane but as a result they forgive him for all the trouble he has created and they love him anyways until his death. "Marley and Me" is a heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life. The book begins with a small story about Grogan's first dog, Saint Shaun. A mutt that saw him through his childhood, he says Shaun was the perfect dog that would set the standards for any other dog he later adopted. The story picks up in the early 90s, where Grogan and his new wife Jenny decided that adopting a dog would help their parenting skills. They adopted a Labrador retriever puppy, and named him Marley after the couple’s love for reggae singer Bob Marley (although Grogan gives the dog a longer name due to majestic dreams of dog shows and stud fees). Marley was not exactly majestic, as he got expelled from obedience school, destroyed the garage when he was left alone during thunderstorms, and ate everything from mangos to 18-karat necklace. But his heart was as boundless as his energy, as he became a gentle, diaper loving giant when children entered the picture, starred as himself in a small family movie, and rode a toboggan through the Pennsylvanian woods when Grogan became an editor of a gardening magazine. However, not all the book is a barrel of crazy dog capers. To anyone that is familiar with most man and his best friend stories, the last four chapters of the book get harder and harder to read as Grogan describes the last years of Marley’s life.
