Man in conflict with nature is a reoccurring topic in many works of literature. However, the nature can be taken in many different ways for example man in conflict with nature could mean man in conflict with animals, man in conflict with his natural self and man in conflict with natures course of life and death. These conflicts can represent themselves as a main conflict or one that helps develop character traits through out the piece of work. Man and the topics at hand have conflicted in many literature pieces. All of these conflicts affect characters in many works of literature. They affect how the character thinks, interacts with other characters and acts in society. Man in Conflict with Animals Man in conflict with nature and more specifically with animals is a great way to show mans perseverance when faced with a hard grueling task of a battle with an animal. However, on the contrary man in conflict with animals has also lead to animals in captivity such as zoos. First, in “The Old Man and the Sea”, the old man is battling a marlin for a great period; he is pushed to his mental and physical limits. Harold Bloom a Professor of the Humanities at Yale University states “the old man will stay with the marlin until one of them is dead.”(Bloom 2). The old man’s determination when in conflict with the marlin is the main premises of the story. Bloom later states, “ Although the old man has been defeated, he has fought with dignity and courage.” (Bloom 4). The old man conflict with the marlin is best used to so the old man grit and strength of mind in times of great anguish. Man in conflict with animals also has another side on in which man captures animals and encages them.
