He quickly grows a negative view upon humanity. “My soul glowed with love and humanity: but am I not alone, miserably alone?" The monster was able to create this bond initially with humanity, which they couldn’t make it with him. So morally what makes him any less human. This could represent Shelley’s view that man in the religious times, rejects something who’s characteristics do not fit gods standards.
The most basic understanding of this piece would be to recognize that man seems to be the main focus of this image, as he seemingly destroys his surroundings and leaves a blanket of dark smog behind him. The city which trails him may signify the industrial age we are leaving behind, the product of man built upon the natural world, signified by the cliff. Also significant, a second city grows from this light skinned man’s back, which may mean the man himself represents corporations who control most of the power in first world countries, while the animals which run from him are all exotic, representing the pillaging of foreign nations’ resources. It is confusing yet intriguing to think about these claims, as most of us do not often consider what we do not see in our own back yard. Another important element of this image, Theodore even claims it to be the most important, is the cliff, as it represents the fact that these natural resources we are harvesting are limited, and there is only inevitable demise ahead of us if we continue on the same route.
With this belief Victor is throwing away the idea of natural occurrences being good, and saying that his creation from dead pieces of various bodies can develop an elite being unimagined by GOD. Another place we see humanity distancing themselves from nature, is when Victor locks himself away from society to delve deeper into his scientific studies. He only sees what can be done with science, and because of this GOD whom is natural, became secondary to science. Science is a very common theme in both Brave New World and Frankenstein; the constant obsession with furthering progress and discovering the unknown led both the society in Brave New World and Victor in Frankenstein to leave natural occurrences behind and attempt to better themselves with
Everette, and the viewers, think that his life will get better when the flood is over, that he will believe in God, leave the con life and his wife Penny will come back to him. Everette ends up saying that there has to be a scientific explanation for the flood, he stays a con man, and his wife Penny doesn’t want him because he doesn’t get her the ring she wants. This is another example of how life gets worse or stays as bad when we think it will change for the
Mill would say that if God is omniscient then surely he is aware of our suffering and would therefore intervene in the evil as he loves us all. Yet God still allows our suffering to continue which suggests that God is not powerful (omnipotent) at all and cannot stop us or save us from this evil. Mill also believes that the natural disasters and natural problems within the human body such as curable or incurable cancers and diseases such as motor-neurone disease (causes of the body to shut down slowly) for example show faults in the design. These disaster show poor design but how can an all knowing
"Here at great expense," he moaned to Oppenheimer, "the government has assembled the world's largest collection of crackpots. “In the epilogue, Sheinkin acknowledges the difficulties of addressing such a big topic. “In the end, this is a difficult story to sum up,” he writes. “The making of the atomic bomb is one of history’s most amazing examples of teamwork and genius and poise under pressure. But it’s also the story of how humans created a weapon capable of wiping our species off the planet.
Produced in the following century where technological advances and growth played a major role in life & society. Shown in both text showing the “Double-Edged Sword” of the power and dominance of science and technology. Shelly’s Warning Voice: Danger of science and values. Through parallel characterisation and Epistolary narrative. Scott’s Warning Voice: Destruction of nature, caused by Science and Technology (taking it too far.)
The replicants are artificial, the memories are artificial. Technology has well and truly taken over. Akin to Frankenstein, Blade Runner acts as a severe warning to the depressing future we may have if we try to push advances of science and technology further and further beyond the limit. As before mentioned, it is the hubris of the protagonists in each text that causes the highest diminution of humanity. In both texts, both protagonists seek earnestly to become God-like by taking on the role of creator, Frankenstein with the monster, and Tyrell with the replicants.
“"The wretch saw me destroy the creation whose future existence he depended on happiness and with a howl of devilish despair and revenge, withdrew." He witnesses his “happiness” crushed by his creator in an instant, in which this new creation would have made him happy in life because he would then have a companion and not be lonely. The monster hopes for happiness and wishes to fix his mistakes, displaying huge qualities that lie within humans ourselves. Being that Victor had created this monster; the monster although huge was a child and acted young. He was
All the evidence is there and it proves why this tale is one of caution. The story warns the reader that if you were mean and greedy, no one would like you. Also, the book shows how a man like Scrooge would not leave a positive impact on the world. One of the biggest fears in life is to die alone without leaving some sort of positive impact on the earth, or at the very least in one persons life. People should take caution in these facts, so that they can live their lives happily and not obtain the same unfortunate fate as
