Planning your team’s work One way to check that team members understand what work required of them is to obtain feedback from them. For example, when team members are given unfamiliar work to do, I will discuss with them how they plan to complete the task, offer advice, suggest where and how to find relevant information and ask to be kept informed of their progress. Monitoring your team’s work To monitor work: hold regular team meetings to discuss targets and workload. Ask for comments and suggestions, identify problem areas, but also discuss what is working well and how this might be applied to the problem areas. With a “mature” team this approach is quite successful in that team members feel comfortable sharing their views and feel able to ask for help with their work. Another way to monitor work, e.g. with a new team member would be to define and agree with them SMART objectives re the 3 key performance areas and agree to regularly review their progress ensuring they understand what is expected and that help and support is available whenever required. One way to rectify under/poor performance is to talk to the team member and identify a specific area where improvement is required. Motivating your team to perform Abraham Maslow, in the 1940s-1950s developed the Hierarchy Of Needs theory and concluded that individuals are motivated by needs and these must be satisfied each in turn starting with “Biological” before progressing to the next. Biological - e.g. food, shelter, sleep Safety - e.g. law, stability, order Belonging - e.g. family, relationships, work group Esteem – e.g. achievement, independence, prestige Self-actualisation – e.g. personal growth, fulfilment If our basic needs are not met then we are no longer concerned with progressing onto the next set of needs. The most basic of needs can influence how the team operates.
