The positive aspects of character building and healthy fitness can build a child’s emotional health. While the negative aspects like injuries and performance pressures can make the experience of youth organized sports unwanted. Medical Statistics can show the negative aspect and educate all who are involved with a young athlete. The District of Columbia and the Chief Medical Examiner’s office established an injury surveillance system at all trauma units that treated residents between the ages of ten and nineteen. Generalization of medical records were completed for those admitted into the hospital, seen in the emergency department, or who died from sports related injuries between June of 1996 and June of 1998. Their findings included a population of two thousand five hundred and sixty three young athletes that participated in baseball / softball, basketball, biking, football, skating, and soccer. In all sports the rates were higher in boys. Being struck by an object, impaled into objects, and just a simple fall were the most common instances. Through this study there were no deaths but two percent required hospitalization. Of those admitted to the hospital, twelve percent were related to improper or malfunctioning equipment, fifty one percent involved another person, and eight percent happened due to poor surface conditions. With those involved in baseball injuries, fifty five percent were impacts to the head with a ball or bat. Basketball injuries included several injuries from striking against the poll or rim or being struck by other opponents and falling backboards.
