Low Turnout of American Political Elections Every year as Election Day approaches, especially during presidential campaigns, critics of American politics decry low voter turnout. In my opinion, there are many reasons that people choose not to vote, making it difficult to get a decent voter turnout for any election. Here are just a few of the reasons that people may either choose not to or just feel that they cannot vote in elections in the US. First, the inconvenient electoral barrier keeps people from voting. This mainly includes two aspects. One is the long time for queuing to poll. Many people in the US are busy with their own business, as a result, they have no time to care about the elections. Although there is an increasing number of places that offer early voting at the voter's convenience in malls and grocery stores, Americans still believe it is too much of an inconvenience for them to take time out of their day for voting. They would rather get their shopping done without having to think about anything having to do with the political process. The other is the fact that the US residents just don’t want to bother with the process at all. In the US, the lack of automatic voter registration is often touted as one of the most significant factors keeping people away from the polls. According to the survey done by political scientists, most of the unregistered citizens fall into the young age group of 18 to 30 years old. These young people pay more attention to their colleges, marriages and careers than any other things, which leads to the neglect of voter registration. Actually, most of them are unfamiliar with the voting process even don’t know where their polling place is . Second, the lack of competition and difference makes Americans reluctant to vote.
