Slim-Fast vs. HCG Amber Padgett COM/155 June 23, 2013 Kimberly Parry Slim-Fast vs. HCG People are always looking for different ways to lose weight. There are many over the counter diet supplements to choose from, but two common diets choices are Slim-Fast and the HCG diet. HCG is a low calorie diet for people who want to lose weight quickly, whereas, Slim-Fast is a moderate weight loss plan. Both plans have specific guidelines and calorie allowances that will be discussed. Although the Slim-Fast and HCG diets are both popular diets used for weight loss, the HCG diet poses higher health risks then Slim-Fast.
In return, caloric intake is dramatically decreased; therefore, the body utilizes fat and muscle tissue for energy ("Low Carbohydrate...," 2004). Over a short period, this type of diet will result in rapid weight loss and health benefits. In our ever changing society, there is one thing that seems to remain the same; the quest for the perfect thin body. Although today there are numerous ways for one to lose weight, some are quick & easy, and some take time & hard work. Sure, most would prefer the quick & easy ways, but the question still remains: Is the quick ways really the best ways for the end results? While comparing two of the more popular fad diets, (not to mention controversial), I will also be including some of my own knowledge from my personal experience with one of these diets. Although the HCG and the Cabbage Soup diets take different approaches to weight reduction, each employ extreme measures for dangerously rapid weight loss.
(Mayo Clinic, 2012) One program always promises to be better than the rest but one thing all these so-called experts agree on is that in order to lose weight; we must burn more calories than we take in. To maintain that loss, we must never take in more than we burn. Studies have proven that the only way to ensure long term weight loss success is through behavior modification. Diet and exercise combined seems to be the most logical and sustainable way to keep excess weight off. Programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig incorporate these habits into their programs while some of the other fad diets concentrate more on the immediate results versus long term success.
Discuss explanations for the success and/or failure of dieting (25 marks) The cognitive behavioural approach looks to explain dieting through positive and negative thought processes. The main reason why people want to lose weight is because they have negative views on their own body image. Herman and Polivy try to explain why restraint might actually increase eating, through their boundary model, which is that when dieting there is a conflict between the physiological need for food and the cognitive control over what should be eaten whilst dieting. The problem is that after the first 5-10% initial weight los the person begins to reach a plateau and the weight loss stops. A further problem is that at this point the body’s psychological needs and desire to maintain a certain set point over ride the cognitive control of the diet.
Companies have the ability to convince and influence people’s mindset and willpower, and it is due to this very reason that environmental factors are thus the main cause of the rising obesity rate. Hence, the author states her arguments clearly and is highly convincing in conveying her argument. However, her views have a clear bias, as she did not mention how will and power could possibly
Three Day Food Intake SCI220 November, 1 2011 Three Day Food Intake My personal three day food intake average was a little over 2200 calories per day. Completing meals healthier and with lower calories will help me stay healthy and lose weight. The average calorie intake for a person my age and weight is over 3600 calories (iProfile 2.0, 2011). Compared to my previous one day food intake of 5600 calories this three day diet is noticeably better.
The study group who took the metformin only had a thirty-one percent of a lowered incidence of Diabetes. I believe that the study clearly shows that moderate exercise can help you lose weight that in turn will greatly decrease your chances of developing type two
And their 45 years of experience helping people lose weight has taught us that each element is equally important. It is a program that adapts to your lifestyle and particular needs, so you can reach success through a more personalized weight-loss experience. An integrated approach that combines smarter eating, healthy habits, exercise and a supportive environment is much needed when choosing Weight Watchers or any other weight-loss program that is being advertised. If you are not able or willing to put in the time and effort by eating the right foods, meaning cutting out the junk food i.e. ; candy, gum, etc., and have healthy habits, exercise regularly and most importantly have a supportive environment, then joining such program would not be a good idea without those few things if not
