Love Poem with Toast Analysis In Love Poem with Toast we are exposed to a humorous yet serious piece of writing. Miller Williams writes the poem in such a way that is relatable to almost any kind of reader, and carries a strong message as well. Throughout the poem, William directs us towards how we should live our life. William’s overall theme in Love Poem with Toast is that instead of trying to control everything in life, especially the little things, we should be focused on love, for it is what gets us through life. Too often, we harp on the small pointless things in life, some that we may not even be able to control. William’s provides examples of this habit such as “wanting to be home by dark” and “wanting the water to boil”. Additionally, this poem expresses a prominent theme of love, thus the title Love Poem with Toast. The piece resembles a strong ideal: even though we distract ourselves with these numerous distractions, love triumphs over all. Only through love may we really find true happiness in life. I chose this theme because William’s message about love stood out the most to me. I believe William’s goal was to emphasize this message of love. William’s focus on love in his final stanza signifies his main point. Throughout this poem, Williams attempts to convince the reader that society needs to stop focusing on microscopic things that don’t matter and just live life to the fullest. The majority of the time we spend far too much time worrying about things we can’t even control. In the end, we allow these small distractions to stress us out and take away from the truly vital parts of our life. It’s time we start prioritizing what’s really important to us, especially love.
