Love: Conditional or Unconditional The Bible states that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.” If what is stated in the Bible is the truth then is love actually something we as humans experience. The protagonists of the novels Beloved, Sethe, and Their Eyes Where Watching God, Janie, experience what they themselves believe is some sort of love. Their ideas of love vary from each person and each thing they themselves deemed as loveable. Although it is not described as the love stated in the Bible their love is powerful beyond measure and is truly present throughout the novels. In Beloved, Toni Morrison portrays love as a strong bond but at times strong enough to destroy. The love in Sethe’s matrilineal line is greatly expressed throughout the novel. The bond has been broken between the mothers and daughters causing them to long for the love of each other. Sethe’s mother showed her evidence of love for Sethe by doing one simple thing. She kept Sethe and gave her a name. Sethe was told by Nan that her mother “threw them all away but you… Without names, she threw them. You she gave the name of the black man,” (Morrison 74). This incite gives Sethe knowledge to know that her mother does love her. Even if she is gone she loved her enough to keep her and name her. Denver, Sethe’s youngest daughter, loves her mother so. She longs for the affection from Sethe. Denver realizes that her mother does love her but she just wants to feel it. Her closes piece of affection is the story of her birth in which her mother tells her about. She yarns for more from Sethe but Sethe really didn’t
