Sharon Caracciolo-Clayton Professor Piland HUM 1020 28 October 2013 Louis Comfort Tiffany The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art “houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933).” (Hosmer ) Strategically placed in the heart of Florida’s Winter Park downtown, the museum offers a rich experience into the life and works of Louis Comfort Tiffany through its display of his stained glass, paintings, and his architectural and interior design work. Louis Comfort Tiffany, born 1848 to father Charles Tiffany, founder of the prestigious jewelry company Tiffany & Co. did not follow his father into the family business; although he did become the art director at Tiffany & Co. in 1902 after the death of his father. Louis Comfort Tiffany began his career as a painter. “By age twenty-four he began his study of the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking.” (Hosmer). He founded the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company in 1892 where he established his unique and innovative method of glassmaking known as favrile glass. “Favrile glass is a type of iridescent art glass designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. It was patented in 1894 and first produced in 1896. It differs from most iridescent glasses because the color is ingrained in the glass itself, as well as having distinctive coloring.” Dictionary.com. “—a development that helped to secure his status as a world leader in glass production. Additionally, Tiffany became widely regarded as a pioneer of the Art Nouveau movement—a role with which he continues to be credited today.” (Louis Comfort Tiffany). Tiffany’s favrile glass allowed him to use stained glass in innovative ways, because he could now put color directly into the glass; as opposed to earlier techniques of painting color onto clear glass.
