Long Distance Nationalism Long distance nationalism is the assertion of an essential connection between dispersed people and a territorially based nation-state that motivates or justifies actions taken on behalf of that ancestral land. Roughly translated, this is the sort of nationalism a person shows that isn’t currently living in the country that they are representing. This is a wide-spread action that many immigrants partake in when they move to another country; usually for better living standards but their pride in their birth country is still as strong as the day they were born. An example of long distance nationalism that is present today would be the remittances that people send back their families in their home countries. This is the aspect that I have focused on for my writing assignment. This assignment required us to photograph an example of long distance nationalism; however I couldn’t really do that because I wanted to focus on the remittances that people send back to their families back in their home countries. So I chose instead to use an advertisement that airs on the local Indian channels. The advertisement is about a money transfer service provided by the company Remit2India. It portrays various people that want to send money back home for their own reasons, whether it is to help family, or buy a home or even for overseas investments. This example is a perfect reflection of how Indian immigrants show that their pride in their home country has not died. This also reflects my personal living style because my parents also send money to our remaining family in India who chose to stay behind. From this advertisement, we can draw a connection to another source example of a society of people portraying long distance nationalism.
