Constructed by the Romans in 50 AD, the London Bridge led to the birth of London, one of the most advanced cities culturally, socially and technologically in the history of the world. Through the reign of the Saxons, the Middle Ages, the Age of Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, both World Wars and now the 20th century, the bridge has been the subject of battles, natural disasters, personal tragedies, death, despair, and great mirth. It has been an integral component of a Londoner’s daily life for centuries, is the subject of one of the most popular nursery rhymes ever and stands as a symbol of the catharsis of London, its rise as a colonial power, and is a testament to withstanding the times.
