The 2008 Farm Act sustains that an agricultural food product is locally or regionally produced if it is shipped fewer than 400 miles from where it originates. Because it is grown in a close proximity local food is always fresh. Choosing to eat local food it has a great impact on people’s health, community and environment. When we choose to eat local food, we choose to take care of our health. Estimates suggest that for an average meal served in the United States, food travels 1,500 miles from its origin to our tables. When food travels a long distance it loses nutrients. Oftentimes vegetables and fruits that are destined for distant markets are picked before they are fully ripe. When they are picked up to early a lot of fruits and vegetables will never reach their full nutritional potential, like for example peaches. When the food travels long distance to get in our plates, the nutritional potential might diminish on the way. On the other hand, local food gives the possibility to be harvest when fully ripped and has a maximum nutritional potential. Moreover, eating local protects us from bio-terrorism. Food with less distance to travel from farm to plate has less susceptibility to harmful contamination. By deciding to buy local food we can help the communities prosper. Money that we spend for local food tends to remain in the community, which care result in job growth, increased income and economic development in rural areas. By buying local food we help regional farms to prosper, we support local economy and we express regional pride. We can become a valuable support for the community.
