Local Environmental Issues Many environmental problems are caused by either air pollution, over population, depletion of natural resources or just simply lifestyles. Regardless of the cause, it is the duty of the family, community, city or country to develop strategies that will bring about sustainability of the nations resources so that it may be preserved for generations to come. Chattanooga, TN is home to more than 152,000 people and is part of Hamilton County that supports a population in excess of 285,000. Building on what matters to its citizens -- the environment, quality of life, and sustainable growth -- the City continues to canvass, analyze, and incorporate goals and objectives to ensure that it stays a model, environmentally-supportable city that listens and cares not just about the environment, but about the generations of Chattanoogans who will inherit it. Local environmental problems in Chattanooga are caused by lifestyles. Many families can boast a clean cut lifestyle of good hygiene, clean habits and the “go green” attitude while others litter streets with no care of sustaining the environment. It is devastating to see motorists throw their wasted foods out the window as they travel. One of our biggest environmental issues that need to be addressed is recycling. Hundreds of recyclable plastics have been thrown in the garbage without any thought of recycling. People are either too lazy or too busy with their lives that they do not think of what is being done to the environment. Consumers are using products that are not recyclable or biodegradable. In my household, we purchase one case of 24 of bottled water every week. We also buy canned drinks and we use a lot of paper. Many families do the same and I feel it is time for us to change our habits, beginning with my own home. If we respect our environment, we will do what is right for
