Lobsang Sangay (born 1968 at Darjeeling) is a Tibetan refugee, legal scholar and political activist. He was elected as the next Kalon Tripa (equivalent to Prime Minister) of the Tibetan Government in Exile on 26 April 2011. Sangay was an active member of the radical Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), a group China designates as a terrorist organization, participating in many protests against Chinese rule in Tibet. In the public lecture ‘Democracy in Exile: The case of Tibet’ organized by the Jindal School of International Affairs, he claimed that “only democracy can resolve the issue of Tibet” He started the lecture informally by telling about himself, his past and challenges of leading the movement. He grew up in a place called Lamahatta. It is between Darjeeling and Kalimpong. It’s a remote Tibetan refugee camp better known for radish and carrots. He also said that he owed a lot to India and the Indian people—he grew up in a refugee camp subsidised by the Indian government. He attended Delhi University and then went to the US. He talked about his campaigning strategy. He said that he campaigned without campaigning, win without losing and get votes without asking. He claimed that those were his ideas, if they like them, remember them; if not then throw them away. He held that leadership is a lonely place. He also advised us to change our thinking about big things, small things and most importantly beautiful things. He told us about the freedom moment having single voice, single leader but unity is paramount. On the other hand democratic moment has diversity, free speech. We have to give up democracy for a freedom moment. In 1963 Tibet got its own constitution. Sept. 2nd is there democracy day.
