My Rationale Listening is a receptive skill. This is an important and an integral part of language learning. Jeremy Harmer says in his book, ‘How to Teach English’ it is important to teach listening as 1“it helps students acquire language subconsciously”. He further says that the 2listening text must be interesting so that learners’ interest is aroused. 3Several English teachers opt for a song to give listening practise. He adds that learning to listen through a song is a good way to motivate students to listen. Keeping this view in mind, I chose a listening text. The song 4‘Who Wouldn’t Wanna to be me’ starts on an optimistic note and shows that though the singer has neither money nor job but the presence of his love next to him makes him the happiest man on earth. This theme will motivate the adult learners a lot and they will listen to the song with interest. Harmer further elaborates, 5“listening demands listener engagement too”. According to him, 6“everything depends on level, and the kind of tasks that go with the tape”. The tasks that I have designed for this song follow Harmer’s guidelines on designing listening tasks. That is why I will first enable students to predict lines of a song. Second, it will enable them to listen for gist, scan, and detailed information. The gist task will give students an idea as to what they are listening. As arranging sentences in order is fairly a straightforward question. The next question, filling the gaps, is a general question. This will activate the student for detailed understanding of the text. The later task however focuses on the detail information and language use. During the feedback of task 4 I will guide the students towards employing their emotional energy, which I will use for generating answer for task 5.
