Abstract Listening barriers in personal relationships stood out to me as my paper topic because personal relationships are apparent in the lives of every human. Being married for just over a year, this new and very personal relationship is not one that comes easy or that can be practiced before hand. We do not have much time together as a married couple and what does and does not affect our relationship is something that is in a very important developmental stage. We try to figure out each other’s thoughts, behaviors, emotions, etc. When I came upon this topic, it easily applied to my marriage and other relationships of many other friends and/or family members. Each type of relationship comes with listening barriers that are due to-but not limited to-emotions, inattentive interaction, wrong or unclear assumptions, life distractions, and selective perception; no matter how small an interaction, personal relationships are deeply effected through these barriers of communication. Personal relations are fragile and they require maintenance through each stage of development. No relationship has immunity to listening barriers as each type of relationship has communication errors due to human tendencies. All relationships have potential listening barriers that need to be worked through, ranging from acquaintances to marriage partners. After reading through what seemed like hundreds of different barriers that could go wrong in communication, narrowing the focus down to five was finally achieved. Each type of relationship has listening barriers that are due to-but not limited to-emotions, inattentive interaction, wrong or unclear assumptions, life distractions, and selective perception; no matter how small an interaction, personal relationships are deeply effected through these barriers of communication. These five barriers will be analyzed in detail
