In the book Like Water for Chocolate, Tita has to choose between true romance, or love that will provide security for her. Tita knows in her heart that her desire for Pedro is greater than her desire for John, but John is more likely to make a better husband. Although Pedro is not very caring and supportive, he and Tita have an enormous passion for one another, one that makes the two almost inseparable. John on the other hand does everything humanly possible to try and make Tita happy. John cares about Tita, but it’s not enough to prevail over the unconditional passion that keeps Tita crazy over Pedro. Pedro is very much like a child and by no means is he an ideal husband. Pedro also makes a couple of decisions in his youth that seem stupid on the outside, but were made with good intentions. “When you’re told there’s no way you can marry the woman you love and your only hope of being near her is to marry her sister, wouldn’t you do the same..” Pedro’s decision to marry Tita’s older sister Rosaura was a very spontaneous thing to do. Although Pedro does marry Tita’s older sister Rosaura, he does so to be closer to Tita. Pedro’s childishness is highlighted after he is burned and begins crying for help, much like a child. “Tita tries to let go of Pedro’s hand so that Rosaura could get closer to him, but Pedro, between moans, cried out to her, addressing her familiarly for the first time: “Tita, don’t go. Don’t leave me.” “No, Pedro, I won’t”” In the passage, it is important to note that Tita obeys Pedro’s calls to help her, also, that Pedro called for Tita and not Rosaura. At this point in the story Tita begins to struggle with herself. After leaving the ranch she was convinced that she would marry John Brown, but the second she interacted with Pedro, she realized that he was the cool draft trying to reignite her match.
