I suppose one could use me as the example proving the phrase that education is wasted on the young.   If you consider my previous effort at college an “academic career,” that would be a stretch.   I began at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in the Engineering School in a Construction Science major.   I enjoyed the classes that were directly associated with the degree.   For example, construction methods and beginning drawing were two of my favorites.   But outside of that, my effort during the semester I attended OSU was a joke.   From there I moved to Norman, OK in the spring of ’94 to attend Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC).   Again my academic efforts were half-hearted at best and after 2 or 3 semesters I gave up.   I wanted the experience that education and a degree would offer but not as much as I wanted my social life.

I have been fortunate in my career; employers have always sought me out for jobs.   By 1996 I had given up on schooling, so when I was approached by AT&T Wireless in OKC to take a franchise in wireless & pager services, I took on the challenge.   I owned and operated the store for two years before selling out to a competitor.   Next, I began a job managing and coordinating a golf course/home construction project that included 120 housing units.   At the completion of construction, and after managing the sales of approximately 45% of the real estate involved, I moved to Texas where I was recruited to work for a large wholesale plumbing supply business and was assigned to manage the inside sales coordination for the company’s largest outside salesman in the Houston TX market.   I continued in that role for 3 years before moving back to Dallas and starting my own home building business.   My business partner and I built high-end townhomes in Dallas, and during that time I was fortunate enough to meet some people that I still consider close friends to this day.   I loved the business we were doing, and the relationships I made while building, but...
