The pool, an endless nirvana of peace and serenity, shines like a beacon against the earthy backdrop. A slight breeze rustles the untouched waters, frozen in time. As the hazy mist of morning light unfolds, so does the quiet. What was once tranquil solitude has now erupted into a cross between a circus and a wild animal zoo. Screams of laughter, shrieks of, “But he started it!” and whistles resonate everywhere. These kids are searching for one thing: relief. The feeling of the water’s icy presence enveloping and shielding their bodies from the sweltering rays is the epitome of perfection. However, for a lifeguard, more fun means a higher possibility of danger. At any second, one of the eighty-five recreational swimmers could submerge, and never recover to the surface. It’s up to the lifeguard to make sure that doesn’t happen. When we think of life-saving careers, we picture doctors and police officers-rarely lifeguards. Instead, we envision the Baywatch beach run with the renowned red bathing suit or perhaps a tan teenager slumped in his lifeguarding chair, polarized sunglasses cocked just enough so that his closed lids are visible. As a pool protector, Geena Carey-a friendly seventeen-year-old with a sharp mind and bright smile-can relate. “There are days where you are so tired and just want to relax, but you can’t because that might be the second someone drowns”, she describes. The moment Geena walks into the room, her amiable disposition and chlorine scent are discernible. Her shiny blond-streaked hair is pulled into a messy bun and she wears a trendy ensemble of an oversized t-shirt and shorts-it’s clear that she has just finished another five-hour work shift. She immediately rushes over and hugs me. After our initial greetings, I begin the interview by inquiring how she manages a job and a college course load (twenty units this fall), and she gives me a
