Today, the meaning of communication has completely changed. It has become much easier to sustain a relationship through social media and the constant interaction that it provides. In contrast, social media can also prove to destroy relationships. Some people may get so caught up in virtual relationships that they have little to no regard for actual relationships. They may become so used to communicating via internet that they lose basic communication skills and can’t hold a face to face conversation.
With Friends Like These written by Tom Hodgkinson talks about the effect that Facebook has on the consumer. Throughout his writing Hodgkinson is very much against the use of the internet because it is an imaginary world that interconnects everyone without much effort than the use of a keyboard and mouse, everything only being a click away. He also continues to emphasize that there isn’t much effort being put into communicating and networking with others in person, putting us on the verge of losing that skill. Throughout his writing the author uses a serious tone that can come across as very negative as he speaks out against not only Facebook, but other big name companies such as Paypal, Coca-Cola and Blockbuster. The use of a descriptive example such as, “A friend of mine recently told me that he spent a Saturday night at home alone on Facebook, drinking at his desk.
Cyber bullying is worse than normal bullying because it occurs on the internet, which is a much larger scale. The internet has become very common in today's society. It has played a major role in the social lives of many children. They are able to shop, communicate, and make good friends just by using the internet. People are also able to distribute information to a lot of people in very little time.
Since using the Internet, I have noticed that when I look through magazines, I LOOK through them not read them. I scan the stories I find interesting, I read the captions on the pictures instead of reading the whole story. When reading movie reviews, I look for the synopsis not the full summary, not because I don’t want a spoiler alert but because I don’t wasn’t to read the whole thing. Using the computer, I usually will have multiple tabs open and will go between them and not do one thing at a time. And now I find it hard to focus on one subject at a time.
This revolutionary way of communication can help build relationships and bonds between people. This fast speed of communication will also help one broadcast them self, and allows them to do it almost as soon as whatever they are broadcasting took place. This new way of communication can only make the world a better place, by linking people together and telling them what they need to know as quickly as possible. Building relationships on the internet is dangerous. Anyone can be behind the computer you are engaging with.
Tevin Hutchinson 11/10/2012 English 102 Technology plays a huge role in our everyday life. I do believe that technology has made our lives easier, but it also has made us more dependent on the technology itself. When using the internet for a dictionary you could easily get distracted. Anyone can put anything on the internet, so what you find might not be accurate. Most people find that looking things up on the internet is distracting because you are already on the web so why not check YouTube for a funny video, or update your status on the social network.
But there is always a treat of loosing ones self in these means and going to some unrealistic relationships that can newer be as strong as real ones. This leads us to conclusion that these Network Sites do isolate people from their real lives and make them forget the real values of a friendship. The use of these Sites cannot be good for any normal relationship because there can newer be real emotions in a virtual dialogue like in the real one. Being able to see and learn so much about a person while sitting in the comfort of your own home is unnatural. There is probably over 50 percent of breakups that were caused by Facebook and its content, or even more of them actually happened on these kinds of sites.
One reason online dating is often preferred is because it is a faster way for individuals to communicate with each other. What really astonishes society today is the fact that relationships can begin from the comfort of one’s home. The fact that there is an option to find a single with a good personality makes online dating that much more convenient than the traditional style. Another consideration when deciding between online and traditional dating is money. Traditional dating is much more expensive than online dating because a majority of dates include going either to the movies or out to dinner.
But Kozol makes some big important points why being illiterate can hurt the person in all parts of life. Kozol states that, “They cannot read traffic signs and, while they often learn to recognize and decipher symbols, they cannot manage street names which they haven't seen before” (Kozol, 4), this is like being trapped inside your own world. If someone cannot read something simple as a stop sign they just have no life to be living. What good are they to the society if a person cannot read? Everything these days counts on mostly technology, being able to understand and read technology is a huge part of today’s society.
Do we really even have the focus and dedication to sit and read a traditional book anymore? The Internet is a splendid addition to our society but we are allowing ourselves to depend on it fully and ultimately permit this technology to affect our mental health. Contrary to the many ways technology has benefited us, it can be harmful for our brains by hindering our concentration, promoting our inability to focus, and causing us to neglect deep thinking. Being distracted is not something new, although it is more frequent now causing us to live in a perpetual state of interruption thus weakening our ability to concentrate. We are just as busy in our offline lives as we are on the Internet.
