Life Span and Development Paper Michael Jackson Tiffany R. Wall PSY 300 October 31, 2011 Dr. Liz West Abstract As human being, there are many factors that influence our psychological development. Heredity, environment, and upbringing shape and mold our progress. In this study I will discuss the psychological development of Michael Jackson. What factors affected his personality and behaviors in adulthood. I will show how Michael’s family issues and social support systems influenced his psychological growth and development. I will discuss which personality theories I feel that best describe him and which theoretical approach I believe best explains Michael’s behaviors and adjustments. Introduction Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958 in Gary Indiana to Joe and Katherine Jackson, he was the seventh of nine children. Michael, like the rest of his siblings showed an early aptitude for music. Michael’s father Joe was once an aspiring guitarist, putting it aside to support his family. Joe began living out his musical dreams through his family, and the Jackson 5 emerged. Michael at the young age of 5 became the group’s lead vocalist. The group became extremely popular within a very short amount of time, signing with Motown Records. At the age of thirteen, Michael began his solo career. He spent the next thirty years becoming the “King of Pop”. With lifelong fame and stardom came bourdons. Everything Michael did became public knowledge and led to public scrutiny. Emotional Development Michael’s musical talent, along with that of his siblings was more than likely due to heredity. Their father Joe recognized this talent early and began developing it early in each child, some from infancy.
