The Civil War was a very hard time for America, there was no winner during this time. When going through rough times like the civil war it is hard to keep going, most just wanted to give up. Inner strength is a very widely used theme throughout many works about the Civil War era. It took everything the members of both armies had to push through the pain of leaving their families and not knowing if they would return. It takes a lot of strength to leave loved ones not knowing if you will ever see them again.
A large number of Russia’s problems were caused by pre-existing conditions such as poor distribution of food supplies, transportation, and inflation. There are a number of other conditions that contributed to Russia’s war problems; however these are arguably the most important factors. Firstly, the requisitioning of horses and fertilisers by the military for the war effort made it difficult to sustain agricultural output, since farmers still used medieval farming techniques horses were needed to produce a harvest, this resulted in a huge decline in food production and threw the lower class into starvation. Furthermore, the army had first rights on the limited amount of food being produced and they had priority in the use of various transport systems, they also commandeered the railways and roads with the result that the food supplies that were available could not be distributed easily to the rest of the nation. This was terribly inconsiderate of the military as the other 82% of the nation was left to starve as the military was the government’s top priority.
Soldiers would be wounded or killed at a high rate in battles. They would also be captured by the enemy. In that case, they would be hung for treason. Other than loss in battle, disease was a major factor in casualties in early wars. Non-commissioned officers were needed to ensure the health of soldiers.

They fought in a style known as total warfare , which was a type of fighting that had proven to be a very poor type of war. This was a style of fighting from the past which had proven to be extremely wasteful in regards to casualties which, were abnormally high when fighting occurred. In most cases people were not buried when they died, and they were almost never buried if they were killed in war.
In result of this, this cause loads of deaths. To conclude the actions from the officers were a very important factor in causing a high death toll in World War One. This was mainly down to their naivety, ineptness and how out of touch they really were. There loss of seeing things for how they really were, was another reason why there army lost so many of their men. In some cases it seemed the army were being sent in blind, as the officers refused to change their old fashioned
But when, because of their carelessness and laziness, ground drills and were abandoned. The army started to feel heavy to them since they started to hardly ever wear it. That negligence, and laziness, led them to asking the emperor to take away the breastplates and next the helmets. So when they went out and fought the Goths they had no protection whatsoever from the head to the chest, and were often beaten by archers. No one tried to replace the breastplates and the helmets.
Being away from home, family, and almost every luxury is both physically and emotionally taxing, having the courage to do this makes being away easier, being told by a piece of paper that you are leaving for a few months to a few years to a location you don’t know, is terrifying. The very lives of our soldiers could hang in the choice of having a draft, as suicides have always been present in all levels of military services. Being sent away involuntarily would easily send almost anyone into a depression, unsafe to themselves and possibly others. Their way of living should not be respected, but it is true that each of them is somehow struggling with their lives The antagonist and narrator of the story, Jake Barnes, experienced World War I as a soldier. During the war, a number of people were wounded and lost their morality on the battlefields. Jake is one of them who is suffering from the trauma from the war. Jake has an injury from the war and as a result, he is unable to physically make a love to women. This disability left him psychologically and morally lost, and takes his masculinity away from him.

Moreover, due to the enormous amount of soldiers dying they “didn’t have enough bells” to mourn all their children which depicts such a tragic loss on a huge scale. Owen puts forward the things the soldiers had to go through and how that resulted in their death or illnesses after being dehumanised and if they survived, when they returned home from the war. The feeling of paranoia and depression has caused the decrease of the soldiers’ emotional wellbeing.
That’s why the supplies never reached the 308th and many of his men had to die without medical and food supplies. However him and his army were able withstand such pressure and hold the stand suffering from waves of soldiers, heavy artillery fire, grenades and other explosions and even flamethrowers. This makes me wonder where the soldiers from the 308th found their motivation to go on, when many others would have already given up and tried to escape or suicide; Patriotism and the love for their country must have been the key. For this reason I think that this action-packed movie portrayed American society in WW1 and in general very well: determined and proud soldiers who never give up the fight for their country and for their rights.
