The other singer can identify with these three girls also because she experienced the same kind of child abuse. Mary J. Blige in the song says, “I know how you feel/ I’ve been there.” When Mary was just a little girl, her father would beat her mother, and then one day he abandoned their family. During that time Mary also experienced being sexually abused by one of her relatives. This goes hand in hand with the two little girls’, Lisa and Nicole, who Ludacris sings about in his song.
The worst thing she passed was when she got raped. In her early childhood Rachel grew up with a very strict and rude father, a dependent, weak mother, and a caring sister. Her parents never realized that after every meal Rachel would secretly go to the bathroom upstairs and throw up everything she had eaten.
Marla stated that there is a history of mental illness in her family citing that both of her parents suffered from depression. Marla also indicated that she had some problems growing up. She stated that she witnessed her parents fight a lot and as a result spent much time alone in her bedroom. When asked about important events that she can remember from her childhood she states that at the age of 10 she experienced the death of a sibling, after which her parents moved to a new city where she felt she did not fit in. She was often taunted and teased by her fellow classmates.

I can recall the time when my grandmother narrated a story of how young girls were punished and even isolated for not following the moral code of conduct in her town. I remember the distraught look on her face and even get chills as I picture the tears in her eyes. It must have been difficult to live up to those expectations because she explained how a girl was not to go out past 7pm.

Anybody who is in a situation and will not stand up for their self, because of previous situations or what they have been taught from their parents, is learned helplessness. Spielberg down played a lot of what Alice Walker, the author, wrote in her book. Walker speaks directly to the audience by using very powerful literary elements such as attitude, detail, and point of view. Alice Walker, being an abused child herself, brings to the table a whole different aspect to the novel.
