Maintaining a relationship with someone is very important also as it keeps you in contact with others. It keeps you in touch with the feelings and needs of others, which is essential in any functional relationship. This is very important when working with children as you need to be informed as to their needs, in order to have a happy work environment. Again, I believe this leads back to the issue of trust. If children can approach you with a problem (without hesitation) then I would class this as a good relationship.

People usually feel satisfied when they communicate well with individuals. Good communication enables individuals needs to be met and for care and support workers to feel, they are not just doing the job but doing it in a way that allows individuals to have choice and control over their lives. It is important for other people to have positive relationships with children because the child needs to gain trust with others too. The child will need to be able to work with teachers to enable them to achieve goals through their education; they also need to feel confident at the doctors in case they need wounds dressing, or an examination of some kind. It is important to have a positive relationship with the speech therapist because they may have a barrier with communication. This can lead to the child gaining the ability to communicate with others.

When working with children and young people in your setting it is very important to work in a team as it can be positive for the children to see. If you work well in a team you will enjoy your work and the children will benefit from that, it should improve their learning and development. It is also important to work in partnerships to build a relationship and to gain trust from the children and their families. You will learn a lot from working together such as the children’s likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, the way they need to be looked after and there education.

It is essential to establish respectful and professional relationships with children and young people and there are certain strategies which enable such a valued and trusted relationship to be established. Relationships with children are built upon trust and understanding and in using effective communication techniques. Effective Communication - is the key area for developing relationships with children and young people as well as others and also covers many different forms of communication as listed below: • Showing respect – Being courteous and respectful, and listening to their points of view is important, as is showing respect for and interest in their parents and family. Children may be from different cultures and have different beliefs or values and it is necessary to acknowledge and respect their views, by spending some time getting to know them as an individual it may help to understand more about their life.
