Unit 1 Assignment – An Introduction to Working with Children There are three different types of settings that offer care and education to children, which are: Statutory: it is the law that these services are available and, in Jersey, are generally funded by the States of Jersey, and in the UK, the Government or the local authorities. Examples of statutory services are public schools. The States of Jersey or the government pay money to either the local authorities or directly to the school to fund for the children's education rather than asking the parents to pay. These services aim to provide children with care and education while being free of charge, suitable for low income families. Voluntary: these services are generally provided by charities and often rely on donations to fund part or all of their service. A well-known voluntary service is 'The Women's Refuge', which runs to support women who are victim to domestic violence. Similarly, voluntary services generally run to improve the lifestyle, care for or protect children and their families. Private: these services are all profit making and usually rely on parents to fund them, such as sports clubs or centres, which run to increase the amount of children who participate in exercise and spread the awareness of a healthy lifestyle among children. Private services are generally leisure and recreational services, such as drama, dance and music classes and run to provide children with entertainment and give them an opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities. Children's Jersey Law 2002 is the main legislation that supports the rights of children in Jersey. This Law was made active on 1st August 2005 and is in place to ensure the welfare and protection of children and the responsibilities that parents have over their child.
