I started learning languages at a very early age, having to grow up bilingual between Catalan and Spanish. The process of learning a new language is time consuming and dedication. However, learning it at a very early age could be advantageous. In my early twenties I embarked on a trip to the UK not having much knowledge of English but enthusiastic and thrilled to discover a new culture with its language. Four months later I began going to school to learn English as before I did not have time. However, I studied every day by myself, using a variety of learning styles and strategies which helped me to enhance and enriched my knowledge of English. Effectively these learning styles have to be practised to a great success. This process of learning English has been quite different to the instructed learning of the German language within a class. I first came across German when I was sixteen years old back in Barcelona. However, the lack of practices and poor instruction of the classes decrease my levels of motivation, therefore affecting on a disinterest and vague attitude towards the development of learning. Motivation is a crucial factor in learning a second language or a third and so on. After learned English for three years and experiencing a variety of learning styles and strategies to a better and effective grasp of the language, I then decided to continue learning German. However, this experience has not been long enough to account or even be comparable to an experience of learning English immersed in the country, culture and education which contributes to a greater success through a continuum effort and perseverance. Learning how to learn is thus an empowering experience th.t students need if they are to be successful lifelong learners.
