Procrastination is a behavior that I really need to change. I am Problem Solving PROBLEN SOLVING and DECISION MAKING Making a choice between a specific behavior that I would change would be a rather easy decision. The first behavior that I will ... the type of person who will wait to the last minute to do everything. For example, when I was trying to register
Culture and Women In “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and “How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl or halfie” by Junot Diaz, both authors elaborate on culture, and how it shapes the outlook on women. In Jamaica Kincaid's “Girl” a mother enforces her cultures strong beliefs on appropriate female behavior onto her daughter. To do so, she displays her parental authority with a series of short commands influenced by her culture. A sense of naivety can be seen in the young girl after questioning her mother's request. The culture associated with “Girl” has a definite attitude towards women, believing they should live a modest, conservative lifestyle.
Now that’s growing up without a childhood. Jane Smiley seems like a great parent who cares about her children but to allow her daughters to put on makeup even entering their teenage years just isn’t right. Her girls where prematurely growing up, where behaving beyond their age, and with their only priority being beautiful at all times it seem to help them in the long run. As they burned off the “Barbie stage” and grew into more important things down their lives. Like for example Smiley talks about her older daughter, “Now she is planning to graduate school and law school and become an expert on woman’s health issues, perhaps adolescent health issues like anorexia and bulimia” (377).
Sommers is trying to teach her daughters that there is more out there and that they can be optimistic, despite what may be going on in our lives. I agree with the writer because I believe that as long as you have life there is hope. Sommers wanted to teach her daughter that they can use their mother and grandparents as examples to better themselves and learn from it all. “To learn a personal eloquence I could never learn at home”. The writer was not able to learn how to speak articulacy because she had inherited a language from her parents.
A mothers duty is to protect their young, and giving birth to a baby girl is a miracle, but then raising a daughter is a whole different miracle. As a mother and a daughter myself, I have gained some knowledge over this relationship myself over my lifetime. Being a daughter, feeling singled out and ridiculed was my mother's way of showing compassion. Sounds backwards? Well I guess it is all a part of the psychology of
As the youngest and an only girl in the family, I have experienced the different advantages and disadvantages of growing up to be a woman. In many ways, certain teachings and influences in their lives have empowered girls to be a mature and responsible woman even at an early age. The guidance of her mother has given her discipline in her actions and consequences. We are often taught how to be “lady-like” at such a young age that it has been imprinted in our minds on what-to-do and what-not-to-do’s. Also, it gives an opportunity for women how to be independent such as cleaning, cooking, running errands, and serving her family.
Alvarez essay explains how her parents and media taught Alvarez self-worth. Alvarez’s explains how she grew up and learned to love herself. “As a young teenager in our new country, my sisters and I searched for clues on how to look as if we belonged here (Alvarez 92). Young girl sometimes find themselves trying to be like people they see on T.V. so that they can fit into the world.
The short story that I chose to read was “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker because I wanted to find out what the title of the story was referring to. After reading I chose to answer question number five which asks, “do you think that most mothers would side with daughters with whom are more politically or culturally sympathetic? What might be the deciding factor? Are most mothers equally supportive of each of their children?” (Schilb and Clifford 256). To start, I think that mothers would side more with daughters who are culturally sympathetic because your culture is what shapes you and political stance can change at any time.
Consequentialism assumes that if human being would weigh the outcome of their taboos and beliefs, then happiness can be achieved and pain reduced. But utilitarianism assumes that people can only value a virtue if it is deemed beneficial in accomplishing human happiness. For example utilitarians believe that truth will make a better society while consequentialists believe that truth will make a better society only if the outcome causes no harm. Basically utilitarianism assumes that the wrongness or rightness of an act depends on the moral good produced as a result of doing that act. This implies that an act is right if it minimizes violation of a certain moral right thus no one should violate moral rights for happiness sake and be justified.
If the family’s custom is for girls and women to wear dresses then the girl infants and toddlers will wear dresses. Children are raised to believe the same as their parent. Children learn from what they see; hence, when parents have sociable lifestyles, their children will most likely going learn how to be sociable children in society. Babies tend to mimic the actions and attitudes of their parents or caregivers. When the parents provide infants and toddlers with stimulation then they will learn more (New, 2011).
