Nurses have a great opportunity to shape the future of the nursing practice through therapeutic communication Armold&Boggs, (2011). While nursing is fundamentally about communicating care and care is at the heart of the nurse client relationship, many problems still remain in the clinical area due to a lack of effective communication. This is supported by Crawford,( 1998).Communication is a key skill of modern nursing practice. Therapeutic Communication is one of the most valuable tools that nurses have to build good interpersonal relationship or trust. I felt the need to develop therapeutic relationship with the patients so that they could feel they could put their trust in me ,also that I was there to listen and talk to them not just care for them.Cutcliff and Mckenna (2005) states that you can gain comfort from drawing on your interpersonal skills, having strength and endurance, feeling self confident , having sufficient competence, beingpeace and ease with oneself and also having a sense of being valued and useful.
“When you delegate, you entrust another person to act in your placed for that particular task or cluster of tasks.” (Hansten & Jackson, 2009, p. 274). The nursing profession has gone through many changes of its practice model. With the past and projected nursing shortages, and the financial challenges of many organizations, nurses are being asked to work with more unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP). In order to provide safe and effective care to our patients, nurses are being asked to assume more of a coordinator of care role, while delegating many tasks to the UAP’s. This has caused much frustration for many nurses as they have never had formal delegation training.
INTRODUCTION to the Nurse Manager Inventory Tool The critical influence of nurse managers in shaping healthy work environments is undeniable. Of every leadership role in health care today, a nurse manager has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their health care experience. Theirs is a far-reaching role with particular impact on achieving a professional culture that successfully recruits and retains expert nurses. In today’s dynamic and complex health care environments, safe and effective care will only be assured when health care leaders can make their optimal contribution to the effort. Nurse managers must not only fulfill their daily responsibilities, they must lead the change demanded that will secure a bright future for American health care.
This seldom happens as there is a perception that by helping John, he may be next in line for an executive promotion. As for the procurement function, the project manager is forced into assuming the responsibility and spends a significant amount of time in tracking down raw materials. The site superintendents believe that they should function as true project managers; are very unhappy for not being involved in the procurement function and hence are not supportive of the project managers. From the above, it is quite clear that roles and responsibilities across the organization are not clearly defined. There is no structure in the organizations’ chain of command.
Leadership Characteristics Leaders must have certain characteristics to maintain their leadership status. Characteristics for leaders can grow and develop along with the person. These characteristics include; the drive for responsibility, vigor, risk taking and problem solving, exercise initiative in social situations, self-confidence, personal identity, willingness to accept consequences, readiness to absorb interpersonal stress, willingness to tolerate frustration and delay, ability to influence other people’s behavior, and the capacity to structure social interactions (Northouse, 2013). Leaders will exhibit most of these behaviors; while some may not exhibit all of them. In the field of nursing, leaders
Competency was frequently employed to determine staff skills against the requirements of a position. It was also used to support staff development, as a tool to facilitate individual performance review, and to identify the ongoing professional development needs of individual staff (Baker R., 2003). Each staff in the ward should have their own competencies on functional, team and organization effectiveness according to their different levels of position including Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse and all the supporting staff working in hospital. Since the competency of each level of staff is embracing or adding on to that below, being an APN, he or she should familiarize with each level’s core competency in order to lead and supervise them to ensure the high standard of care in the ward. According to World Health Organization, “standard of care” is defined as a generally accepted level of care or set of processes that all practitioners should follow in dealing with a specific patient or disease.
Leadership and management in nursing are very important, which indirectly affect the quality of health care provided to patients. Donner and Wheeler (2004) stated that, leadership and management are believed to be required at all levels of the organization to provide staff alignment, learning and professional development, which can help in optimizing the patient's positive. In other words without both parties everything can be failure. Prosperity in health care can lead to optimal patient outcomes through the provision of employee organizations, which in turn achieve the vision and mission set by the organization. To describe what are management and leadership, Kolter (1990), describes that management is to prevent chaos through structured policies and monitoring, beside that it is to provide clear goals and direction to allow others to achieve their policies, objectives, vision and mission.
Also when I was in the hospital I saw what the nurses did and I thought it was pretty interesting. After all this I decided this was something I knew I wanted to do. Nurses have many daily activities that they must follow in order to perform their duties. The activities or roles the registered nurse may change depending on the day or the patient. All nurses have a scope of practice they must follow but depending on the patient will tell them what procedures to perform.
Counsellor which is a process helping the patient recognise and cope with the problems. Leader influences others to work together and understanding goals to motivate people. Manager to manage work load as well as situations. Kozier, Erb, Berman, Snyder, Lake and Harvey (2008) Having worked in the care field as a residential care manager and also being a mother I see myself as possessing various skills which is inter changeable with nursing. Which has helped me to incorporated these skills into my daily life.
For example, if a resident was developing a pressure sore, it would be my responsibility to report this concern to the nurse on duty. If I did not report my concerns then I could be held responsible for the decline in that particular resident’s health. Thus, I have come to learn that care assistants, along with the nurses, are expected to take responsibility for the well-being, safety and care of not only the residents but for ourselves. As a care assistant, it is important to attend regular training sessions to develop the knowledge and understanding I have gained whilst working within the home and from the training I received at the commencement of my employment. According to the Royal College of Nursing, “many organisations provide robust and comprehensive training programmes for health care assistants.” However, in a study commissioned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, it was noted that health care assistants have been reportedly undertaking tasks they have not received the training for; tasks that should be carried out under the supervision of a registered and qualified practitioner who has received the training for such a task.
