Leadership and Management: A Nursing Perspective

Abstract This paper is based off a scenario about a well-known nurse manager, Mr. Y.T. and his leadership style. Mr. Y.T. has been a nurse manager on a unit for 15 years. This unit has a high attrition and call-in rate. Mr. Y.T. is rarely available to his staff for assistance. His leadership style can be best described as Laissez-Faire. The staff members have major concerns about the way the unit functions on a daily basis. This chaos of the unit is a reflection of the nurse manager’s leadership skills. Different leadership styles which are utilized in nursing practice are defined in this paper. This paper describes management and leadership skills a manager or leader should possess. Leaders also use powers to meet their desired commands or goals. Politics and conflict are important aspects of a unit. Utilizing leadership/management skills in practice is essential to nurse managers/leaders.

Introduction According to Huber, “Leadership is an activity of human engagement and a relationship experience founded in trust, communication, inspiration, action, and “servant-hood.”” (Huber, 2010). There are many types of leadership styles utilized in organizations. Authoritarian leadership style gives commands. Authoritarian leadership style can make the work place hostile and limit the independence of the followers. This style is most useful in crises situations. Democratic leadership style encourages participation from followers by including them in decision making. A disadvantage of democratic leadership style is that it is too time consuming to get a group consensus. In Laissez-Faire leadership style, the manager is giving little to no direction.
