The statement claims that laws should be flexible so as to account for various circumstances, times and places, which I don’t necessarily agree. On the vertical scale, laws have been changing throughout the history of human society, no matter in what community or country. Horizontally, the properties of laws decide that laws should not be as flexible as the author states and also impossible to be able to account for diverse situations. Based on these two arguments, I discord with the author. First of all, from the oldest law in human society recorded, the Code of Hammurabi to the latest establishment of laws and amendments, we can see that laws are changing since always. There are no laws that are perfectly flexible to explain and be taken as a cure-all (panacea) standard to explain every situation, even though lawmakers always want to establish a law that can account for different situations to reduce the costs of judice and implementation. However, I presume they also know it’s impossible. For instance, back to the ancient Arabic world, they had strict laws with women’s rights of speech and their initiatives in work. And this is changing in countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia currently. Thus, if a woman is seen walking on the street alone in ancient Iran, she might have been beaten or even prosecuted. However, time has elapsed, and it’s normal for a woman to do that instead of what’s still the situation in Afghanistan. Thus, time has proved that a law cannot explain the same situation throughout any period of human history, which stems from the properties of laws. Laws are commenced most of the times according to the majority in a democratic and open manner. However, even though the people who make laws are trusted and authorized, they cannot promise to be impeccably disinterested. Laws are subjective products of the people in power.
