A Giant Step Thinking about the reading 1.) What “mixed feelings” (paragraph 7) does Gates have about his shoes? Do you think he also has mixed feelings about surgery? Gates have mixed feelings about his shoes because his shoes and him have been together since 1975. They were orthopedic shoes built around molds of his feet, and they had a 2 ¼ -inch lift. On the one hand, they had given him a more or less even gait for the first time in 10 years. On the other hand, they had marked him as a “handicapped person.” Complete with cane and special license plates.
