Geraldine Brooks explores how ignorance, superstition and hysteria can be as fatal as any plague within her novel ‘Year of Wonders’. During the trying year of the plague superstition, ignorance, and hysteria took over the village, causing people to make irrational accusations, decisions and behave immorally, turning against each other. Brooks explores how the plague acts as a catalyst effecting each of the villagers differently on a physical and emotional level. The plague is defined as a large amount of insects or animals infesting a place causing damage, within the novel we see the villagers become these animals. Fear and anguish brought out some of the worst qualities in the villagers causing them to turn against one another creating anger, conflict and damage unto one another.
Within the novel of ‘Of Mice and Men’ there are three main outsiders that are mentioned, an outsider by definition is someone who is not accepted or is isolated from society. The novel is set in the 1930’s in America where copious amounts of people were construed as outcasts in the eyes of society. During this period many people were racist, sexist and prejudice towards disabled people. Lennie, Crooks and Curley’s wife are all considered outsiders as they each had something that the society at the time was prejudiced towards. In the 1930’s black people were highly discriminated against.
Which is also a foreshadowing because the reader is always scrared that he would do smoething. This is why he always wreks things animals and persons. Steinbeck thought that Lennis is a good caracter to show that often something goes wrong. Furthermore, during the Great Depression, food prices and items increased making it more difficult to get hold of a job at the time. In some cases people would not get work at all, which is why some characters in Of Mice and Men found themselves in a very lonely and isolated environment. In Of Mice and Men, racism is displayed upon the negro on the farm.
Use of foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men Midway through the 1930s during the Great Depression, many people were being isolated from society. They were becoming less close to the American Dream. The Great Depression was a time period where many lost their jobs and homes. There was an explosion of poverty throughout the whole United States (Loftis 134). All these events inspired John Steinbeck to write his novella Of Mice and Men.
People of color had no rights in America; they were considered sometimes 'unfit' for the world. Women too had very little rights. The workers ended to be losers and loners and Curley's wife whose name we don't hear throughout this novel, was no different to them in terms of loneliness that's probably why she would chat up men. Curley's wife. Ot having a name also shows that although she was a somewhat significant character in Steinbeck's novel in real life and in that period women in general are not especially this one.
‘Year of Wonders’ by Geraldine Brooks which is a historical fiction and circular structure form of text, explores the horrific ways the villagers in Eyam respond to a crisis by revealing the darker side of human nature. As the plague outbreaks, the villagers are faced with immense challenges and as a result some of the villagers are seen as selfish and uncharitable. “These times do make monsters of us all”. However Brooks also wants us to recognize that some are forced to show courage and compassion. Brooks contrasts a strong feminist theme and positions us to see their heroic gestures to the weaknesses of men as the villagers are faced with great tragedies.
