Language and Memory Language and Memory The ability of an individual to communicate words, signals, conveys thoughts, attitude, and emotions through behaviors are found in the process of language production. Individuals tend to display creativity and diversity within his or her language. Semantic memory provides meaning or reference to language production. For example, an individual can discuss Woodstock and can develop or experience a memory of that particular event or situation without having the actual experience. As a result, it is necessary to explore the connection between language production and semantic memory. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the connection between language and memory. The paper will discuss the function of semantic memory and the function of language production. In addition, the paper will outline the stages involved in the language production process and explain the relationship between semantic memory and language production process. The Nature and Function of Semantic Memory Semantic memory is based on information and or common facts that most individuals know. According to Robinson-Ziegler (2008) “Semantic Memory is cumulative memory that an individual acquires throughout his or her life from various sources, experiences, and perceptions.” Semantic memories contain facts and or information that individual have retained over years of experience from a wide range of environments, which include personal, educational, cultural, and environmental. According to Mayes, et al. (2004), “Semantic memory is considered to be a memory that is rehearsed and learned over time than an episodic memory.” (P.428).Another function of semantic memory is to encode and store information not pertaining to episodic memories.
