Tentative Title: Slope Stability Analysis: A case study of Landslide Hazard in Chittagong City, Bangladesh. Introduction: Landslide occur around the world but they cause the most human fatalities in the developing and least developed countries (Karsli et al., 2008). According to EM-DAT (2009) reported between 2000 and 2008, landslide killed about 3345 people mostly in developed and least developed countries like Philippine, India, Nepal,China and Bangladesh etc. Landslide process is generally charecterized as the downward movement of the earth material, which is triggered by heavy rainfal, earthquake and volcanic eruption (Fell et al. 2008). However, rapid urbanization and human development activities such as building and road construction through deforestation and excavation of hill slope have increased landslide related fatalities in density populated cities located in mountainous area (Galli and Guzzetti, 2007). In fact, low income people in the cities of poor countries often occupy Government and/or private owned land both legally and illegelly and build informal settlement along unstable hill slope without following any existing building code, standard or regulaties (Nathan, 2005) In fact, every year especially in the rainy season landslides take place in both natural and man-induced slopes. Although, Bangladesh is a densely populated country, the hilly region presents a sharp contrast with the overall demographic pattern. This is partly due to the landslide hazard potential which discourages many people to live there as well as to build infrastructures; however, inaccessibility, dense forest cover and the hilly topograpgy are also discouraging factors. The main purpose of slope stability analysis are finding endangered areas, investigation of potential failure mechanisms, determination of the slope sensitivity to different triggering mechanisms, designing
