* What is the motivation for writing about this topic?
This management review is about land control in Africa and raises the question whether it is time to invest in Agribusiness in this often “forgotten continent”. The article discusses how this continent is changing over the years and whether a spur in investment could potentially develop a new miracle in agriculture (as it happened in Brazil). It offers several possible scenarios that could potentially change the African continent dramatically and the additional benefits and repercussions of these actions.
* Who are the main participants (people or firms) in this case?
African communities, locals, in this case would be mainly affected by foreign intervention, as well as outside investors from foreign countries.
* List the main points you learned from studying this case.
Africa is drawing foreign interest, especially in places like China, India and Korea, who are eager to invest in its agribusiness. Investment could potentially result in a better standard of living in Africa; however, it is more than likely that it will be the outside investors that reap positive benefits. There is a lot of potential to allow foreign investors to misappropriate land use in Africa and there’s a risk that its government might not be able to represents its constituents best interest efficiently. A damaged and corrupted governmental structure in Africa might prevent the new agricultural model from reaching its full potential, hence there is the possibility to have “tragedy of the commons”, where we have a drop in productivity and deterioration of the environment. Overall, just like miracle in Brazil, Africa will require solutions (technology and others inputs) and investment in order to reach its full potential.
