Lack of Travel in the USA * The number of Americans who traveled overseas has decreased overall since 2006. * Americans didn’t find a new sense of adventure. * Cultural ignorance. * Americans are ignorant in that they don’t know about the world. * As education budgets continue to get slashed, humanity courses are usually the first to go meaning people learn very little world history. * Only about 20% of Americans own a passport. * This number may be on the rise, but it's only because Americans are now required to show a passport when visiting Mexico, Canada, and parts of the Caribbean. * So while more of us have our passports, Americans are still not traveling abroad. * Reason 1: America is huge. * Americans simply don't see the need to go anywhere else when they can do it all in their own backyard. * It's not that America's size makes travel prohibitive, its size is important because people feel there is no reason to leave. * Reason 2: Fear * I think most Americans are scared of the world and when they see they have everything around here More Notes * We can't do this, he said, when we short change social studies, geography, and foreign language classes, as more and more schools have in recent years. * We’re really the first generation that hasn’t had to deal with large scale issues surrounding civil rights, immigration, or nuclear warfare. * For the first time in just about all of history, our generation’s perception of other countries and their peoples hasn’t had to be colored by a commonly accepted fear and hate for other races and ethnicities. * News reflects a pessimistic and dangerous world that hates America, hates Americans, or is somehow “against” America. It’s no wonder your everyday person could easily think everybody hates our country.
