Analysis The fifth experiment under physics10L is all about friction. It is the force that opposes the motion of a body. It can also be described as a force between to surfaces rubbing together. It is high if the surfaces are dry and rough and it is low if the surfaces are smooth and wet. Some basic facts about fiction is that when two smooth surfaces rub together, there is a very little friction, when two rough surfaces rub together there is more friction and lastly, there is more friction if two surfaces are forced against each other. In this experiment, the objective is to determine the coefficient of friction ( μ ) between contact surfaces (particularly wood to wood) as one body moves with uniform motion and to establish the relationship between the angle of repose ( θ ) and ( μ ). This experiment has three parts with five succeeding trials. The first setup is for the determination of the coefficient of friction ( μ ), wherein the weight of the block of wood is changing as well as the force that triggers the motion of the block in constant speed. The second setup is for the determination of the angle of repose or the steepest angle for constant velocity of the friction. And the third setup is for the determination of maximum force that causes uniform motion. The materials used in this experiment are string that is attached to the wood and pan, pulley for the alignment of the string, protractor for the determination of the angle of repose, inclined plane that is also wood for the overall experiment, it is the object where the block of wood will glide and lastly, the meter stick that is used for measuring the vertical height and horizontal distance for the second part of the experiment. Determination of the Coefficient of Friction On the first part of the experiment, the objective was to determine the coefficient of friction using the formula μ =
